Mourinho confirms one of his Man United favourites is injured v Basel

Man United v Basel

Manchester United return to Champions League action this week when Swiss champions Basel come to Old Trafford.

On Monday, Jose Mourinho met the press before the UCL opener.

Mourinho confirmed that one of his favourite players, Marouane Fellaini, is out injured.

Fellaini missed the weekend’s 2-2 draw at Stoke, and after the game Mourinho waxed lyrical about the Belgium international:

This was a game for Fellaini and then on the set-pieces we would be more dominant than we were, we didn’t have much time after the 2-1 to kill the game because if we have a little bit more minutes with the result at 2-1 I think they have more pace for us and we kill the game.

It’s now be confirmed that Fellaini will also miss the Basel game as he’s sidelined with a calf injury.

#MUFC boss Mourinho hopes Fellaini overcomes his calf issue. “He’s an important player for me – a lot more important than you can imagine”

Good news for David De Gea

Man United qualified for this season’s Champions League after they won last season’s Europa League.

David De Gea was left on the bench last season in Europe as Sergio Ramero started between the sticks.

So will Romero be in goal this season as well? No. Mourinho has made following statement about his goalie.

Jose Mourinho confirms David De Gea will start for #MUFC against Basel instead of Sergio Romero. Won’t have one GK for league, one for cups

Bad weekend for Basel

Basel will arrive in Manchester with rather low confidence. After seven rounds of the season, Basel are only third in the Swiss top flight.

Indeed, Basel have failed to win their last three matches on the spin in the Swiss Super League.

Back to back 1-1 draws against Lugano and Sion were followed up on Saturday with a 2-1 home defeat to basement dwellers Lausanne Sport.

The win was Lausanne Sport’s first of the season.
